Only 43 percent of test takers met the definition of being prepared for higher education. 1.6 million students averaged scores of 496 for reading, 514 on math, and 488 on writing.
The College Board says the college-ready level is at least 1550 out of 2400.
But there is some good news this year for minorities. 15.6 percent of African-American students are college-ready compared to 14.8 percent last year. And 23 and a half percent of Latino students hit the mark this year, up from 22.8 percent.
